Ian Banja was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. The self-taught artist is fascinated by the close examination of ordinary objects and placing them in an unusual context. While his subjects are diverse, Banja is repeatedly drawn to portraits and the everyday encounters his subjects find themselves in. In his Struggles series, the artist depicts the habitual hustles of his peers as he states, "I try to express the everyday tussles I witness; the stories I have are never ending.”
