Ian Banja (b. 2000, Nairobi, Kenya) is a self-taught Kenyan painter who was born and raised in Nairobi and has more recently been based in New York. He is known for an upbeat street style combined with careful technical and aesthetic consideration, which he regards as essential to the final image. Portraiture is at the centre of his practice: he depicts his peers and the encounters and everyday struggles he witnesses in his community, summing up his approach with the words “Life is Art”. Rather than posed likenesses, he aims to present his subjects in a calm, dignified way, celebrating their style and confidence while conveying hope and love alongside the realities of daily life. He has named Wangari Mathenge, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kehinde Wiley and Oluwole Omofemi among his influences. Banja made his art-fair debut at the Cape Town Art Fair in 2021 with Eclectica Contemporary and has also been presented at miart in Milan. The paintings “Strong and Bold” (2022) and “Finding My Way II” (2022), acrylic on canvas, offered by TUMO Gallery, reflect his focus on confident, self-possessed young figures.
