Her calm, often pupil-less women are built from simplified forms and textured planes of colour, alongside vessels, snakes, columns and celestial orbs.
Hilda Palafox (b. 1982, Mexico), also known as Poni, is a Mexican artist who lives and works in Mexico City. She graduated in graphic design from the Design School of the National Institute of Fine Arts (EDINBA) in Mexico City, a background that informs her attention to line, colour and the syntax of the image. Since 2006 she has been spreading her characteristic female figures, first under the name Poni, across walls in Mexico and abroad, with murals in Mexico, the United States, Canada, Japan and Brazil. Her practice spans painting, drawing, ceramics and textiles, with the female figure as her main means of expression. Her women, with their calm, often pupil-less gaze, are built from light bodies, simplified forms and textured planes of colour, and turn everyday activities into subtle analogies for emotions. Her compositions frequently include symbolic motifs such as vessels, snakes, columns and celestial orbs. She is represented by Proyectos Monclova in Mexico City and has taken part in exhibitions and projects in Mexico, the United States and Japan, including POW! WOW! Hawai‘i (2019) and “Instruments of Change” at the Fullerton Museum Center (2019). The painting “Momento II” (2021), oil on canvas, offered by TUMO Gallery, is characteristic of her serene, pared-down treatment of the female figure.
