Nick Darmstaedter (b. 1988) is an American artist based in New York who works across painting, sculpture and mixed media. He is closely associated with The Still House Group, the artist-led collective and exhibition platform founded in New York in 2007 by Isaac Brest and Alex Perweiler. Darmstaedter often works with found objects and images; the processes of gathering and sorting, in which chance plays a significant role, are central to his practice. Rather than presenting readymades as they are, he transforms his materials while emphasising their physical properties and original forms, and his work draws on the legacy of American Pop and Minimalism. He has described his approach as visually led and research-heavy, noting that the information behind a work does not need to be known to the viewer. In 2014 he took part in the group exhibition “Service Entrance” at Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens in Belgium and presented the solo show “T2MamaTambien” at T293 in Rome. In 2015 he showed with The Still House Group in “Testing Ground” at the Zabludowicz Collection in London and held the solo exhibitions “Make Like a Tree” and “Long Play” with the group, followed by “new lows, dead precedents” at UTA Artist Space in 2018. A monograph on his work has been published by Mousse Publishing. “KOOLS 12” (2014), offered by TUMO Gallery, is a pigment print on paper mounted on canvas.
