Collection: Miaz Brothers
The Miaz Brothers (b. 1965 and 1968) are an Italian duo of two Monza-born brothers living and working in Valencia, Spain. They studied at the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Milan and won the Art Prize of the Museum of Amposta (2010) and the Arte Laguna Prize in Venice (2011). They are best known for large-format spray-paint portraits whose deliberately blurred, out-of-focus images dissolve their outlines and reflect on the transience of existence.
The Miaz Brothers (b. 1965 and 1968, Monza, Italy) are an Italian artist duo of two brothers who live and work in Valencia, Spain. They studied at the art high school in Cantù, near Como, from 1980 to 1984, and later at the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Milan. Their early solo exhibitions included “Skins” (1989), “The Anarchists” (1990), “The Artists” (1991) and “New Age” (1995). The duo are best known for large-format portraits in which spray paint is used to create a deliberately blurred, out-of-focus image that seems to dissolve its outlines. They describe this “substantial indetermination” as a way of showing that “we are composed of infinite particles in continuous evolution”. In 2012 they launched their “Antimatter” series, which includes portraits of friends, philosophers and fashionable Japanese women, and the “Masters” series based on portraits from the English Restoration period. They chose portraiture because it raises questions about the transitory nature of existence. Their awards include the Art Prize of the Museum of Amposta (2010) and the Arte Laguna Prize in Venice (2011), and they have collaborated with brands such as Adidas, Swatch, Diesel and Kenzo. The large painting “Lady S” (2015), offered by TUMO Gallery, is a characteristic example of their blurred portraiture, in which the sitter emerges only gradually from a haze of colour.
