Anton Smit (b. 1954) is one of South Africa’s best-known contemporary sculptors. He is celebrated above all for his monumental heads, faces and human figures, which are displayed in public spaces and private collections in South Africa and abroad. Smit works in a wide range of materials, including stone, steel, bronze and fibreglass, and his figures often combine a classical sense of form with expressive, fragmented surfaces. The stone sculpture “Bathsheba” (1995), offered by TUMO Gallery, refers to the biblical wife of King David and mother of King Solomon. His large-scale works can be seen in the Anton Smit Sculpture Park near the Bronkhorstspruit Dam, east of Pretoria.
