Part of the "Diaspora" series created in 1968, Tobiasse’s "Diaspora" comprises a total of 19 color lithographs, each hand-signed by the artist and reflecting his exploration of Jewish identity, exile, and spiritual resilience.
This painting depicts the Jewish Seder, a ritual dinner held on Passover, which symbolises the Israelites' exodus from Egyptian slavery. We see a table surrounded by people sitting around a table, with wine in glasses and seder dishes (matzah, herbs, etc.) in the centre. At the top, we can see the figure of Moses with two stone tablets (the Ten Commandments), which reinforces the theme of liberation and the Covenant. The painting's expressive style, orange tones and symbolic elements show the artist's desire to convey both the sacredness of the ritual and the community.
