Samuel OLAYOMBO (g. 1991, Nigerija)
Samuel Olayombo's paintings feature a texture reminiscent of scarification, common in some Yoruba (one of Nigeria's largest ethnic groups) cultures, leaving scars. Rough-textured skin, a cowboy hat, and a reddish background. By consciously juxtaposing aspects traditionally assigned to male and female genders - rough-textured, scarred skin, a cowboy hat, and a reddish background - Olayombo raises questions about toxic masculinity, macho culture, constructs of sexuality, gender roles, and gender equality.
