God Protects Fools & Drunks (2021) by Olivia Sterling is a vivid painting that explores themes of race, embodiment, and consumption. The artwork features fragmented body parts interacting with food and spilled liquids, rendered in bold colors and strong outlines. Sterling uses contrasting skin tones and messy gestures to highlight racialized perceptions of the body and behavior. The title references a common phrase about divine protection for reckless actions, adding a layer of irony and social critique. This piece exemplifies Sterling’s signature style, combining humor with a sharp examination of identity and cultural stereotypes.
