Max Band'as (1900-1974) - a globally renowned Litvak, began teaching art at the Marijampolė Jewish Gymnasium in 1919. Later, he lived in Berlin, Paris, and from 1940 - in the USA, where he became well-known (having painted a portrait of US President Franklin D. Roosevelt).

Works by Max Band are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Art in Lithuania, the San Diego Museum of Art in California, the Spertus Museum in Michigan, Chicago, the Musée de Luxembourg, Petit Palais in Paris, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Riverside Museum, as well as in collections in the USA, Israel, and Lithuania.
