Matías Sánchez Born in 1972 in Tübingen, Germany. Lives and works in Seville, Spain. A self-taught artist, he held his first exhibition at Cavecanem, Seville, in 2001; a year later his work was shown at ARCO, Madrid, to warm critical reception.
Sánchez paints with thick, spontaneous impasto, reclaiming the expressive power of drawing and popular imagery. His caricature-like characters quote art history with humour — Pintor en Provenza ("Painter in Provence") plays on the figure of the painter in the South of France, with pipe, straw hat and swirling brushwork.
