KOJO MARFO - b. 1980, Ghana/UK
The artwork was exhibited at the exhibition "Contemporary African Art: Dreams and Realities of Identity" at the Vytautas Kasiulis Art Museum from May 10, 2022, to October 9, 2022.
Marfo was born in Ghana, but not long after moved to London. His early inspirations were traditional Akan artefacts, sculptures and carvings, now used to highlight social difficulties, conflicts of religion and politics. Visual abstractions, African symbols, bright colour combinations and script reminiscent of graffiti create a dynamic visual experience. These works act as a mirror of post-modern society and are used to depict the true beauty of the African continent, its culture, the profound inner world of its people, which is often poorly portrayed in mainstream representations.
