The works of Kenneth Showell (1939-1997, USA), along with those of other significant artists of the time, played a crucial role in the discussions about abstract painting at the end of the 1960s. By the end of the 1960s and into the beginning of the 1970s, the artist had reached the heights of abstract expressionist painting. During this period, he created paintings with a trompe l'oeil effect - the relief of the artworks appears wrinkled, although the canvas is smooth.
