Unframed. With a certificate of authenticity.

Esther Mahlangu (b. 1935) is the best-known artist of the South African Ndebele people. She learned Ndebele wall painting from her mother and grandmother and carried its bold geometric patterns onto canvas. In 1991 she became the first woman to paint a BMW Art Car.

In 2024 her retrospective “Then I Knew I Could Paint Well”, curated by Nontobeko Ntombela, opened at the Iziko South African National Gallery and then began an international tour. The same year her works were shown at the Brooklyn Museum in the “Giants” exhibition of the Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz collection, and she took part in the Venice Biennale.
