The exhibition “Then I Knew I Could Paint Well”: Esther Mahlangu, a Retrospective, curated by Nontobeko Ntombela, opened on February 17, 2024, at the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town. It traces Dr. Esther Mahlangu’s career spanning over 50 years and her emergence as a globally recognized contemporary artist. The retrospective remained on view at Iziko until August 11, 2024, after which it traveled to the Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg.
Meanwhile, her work featured in Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys, which opened at the Brooklyn Museum (February 10-July 7, 2024).
Since its debut, Giants has been touring: it was shown at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta (from September 2024 into early 2025), then at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (March 8-July 13, 2025).
Also: in Paris, Turenne, Almine Rech presented “The Order of Things”, which featured Mahlangu’s work (June 7 - July 20, 2024).
