I lived here for two years while working as a schoolteacher in the village of Šešuoliai, having this avoided military draft. My landlady, Mrs. Ragulienė, is sad, because the collective firm took away the grassland for her cow which used to graze right next to the house. In a saucepen sits her late husband often dreams as returning hungry from the cementary. My surly neighbour Ragulienė, who cut off our running water supply in midwinter is sitting in an armchair In the rear of the room sits my landlady's invalid sister Stasė. She is making wild berry jam. Behind the window stands a thief whom my landlady greatly fears
