Collection: Vytenis Lingys
Vytenis Lingys (b. 1956, Lithuania) is a painter. He studied painting at the Vilnius Academy of Arts (formerly the Vilnius Art Institute) under Jonas Švažas and Antanas Gudaitis. From 1969 to 1974, he attended the Vilnius Children’s Art School. Between 1974 and 1980, he continued his studies in painting at the Vilnius Art Institute (now the Vilnius Academy of Arts). He has created scenography for films, as well as stage sets and costumes for theatres in Šiauliai, Kaunas, the Vilnius Youth Theatre, and Leningrad. He has also designed numerous state celebration events and produced various Japanese-style lighting objects.
He has participated in artists’ symposia in Nida, Scotland, Germany, Mauritius, Japan, and France. He has held 24 solo exhibitions and taken part in 37 group exhibitions in Lithuania, France, Germany, Japan, Norway, the United States, Russia, the Netherlands, Hungary, Canada, Estonia, and other countries.
Art historian and philosopher, Professor Antanas Andrijauskas, describes Lingys as one of the most intellectual contemporary Lithuanian painters, whose works stand out for their original, metaphorical thinking, sensitive artistic forms, and a distinctive use of color. Since 1988, he has been a member of the Lithuanian Artists' Association.
Lingys' work now concentrates on the immensity of the natural world inspired by the raw landscapes of Andalucia, Spain, where he now spends six months of every year.
His current works are often large-scaled oils on canvas, painted within and outside his studio in Velez Malaga. Explosions of many, richly layered oils on canvas, Lingys' works absorbs the viewer into his vision of his abstraction of the forces of nature.
As described by the French critic Christian Noobergen: "A strong painter of lines of intimacy and signs of crazy life, Lingys' brush navigates extraordinary, magical graphic realms, but leaves an open and infinite expanse of the void".
