Collection: Vytautas Povilaitis
Vytautas Povilaitis (1927–2009, Lithuania) was a painter and creator of frescoes, panels, stained glass, and mosaics.
From 1944 to 1950, he studied at the Kaunas State Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts in the Department of Decorative Painting. He began participating in art exhibitions in 1954 and became a member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association in 1957.
He painted landscapes and thematic compositions, and created portraits. In 1959, together with Vladas Jankauskas, he produced mural compositions for the Neringa Café in Vilnius. He also depicted Lithuanian cityscapes and created various wall paintings.
In his later period, he developed a distinctive style based on generalized motifs. From the 1960s onward, he created decorative abstractions. His works are lyrical, characterized by a constructive composition, vivid colors, and large planes. He also created decorative panels, mosaics, and stained glass works. His works are held in the Lithuanian National Museum of Art.
“Povilaitis painted for half a century (1953–2004); his works may seem somewhat solitary, yet they reflect an entire epoch of modernist Lithuanian painting.” – Kristina Budrytė
“It is a pity that so few people know this artist, who helped lay the foundations of Lithuanian abstractionism. He truly deserves recognition and attention.” – G. Andziukevičius
