ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Painter Vytautas Dubauskas is one of the most prominent figures of Lithuanian Neo-Expressionist painting and a member of the legendary group "Angis", which fundamentally reshaped the direction of Lithuanian painting in the 1990s. The exhibition “Unrestrained” presents works created in recent years, revealing an uninhibited energy of colour, gesture, and emotion.
Dubauskas’s paintings bring together expression and improvisation, reality and abstraction. Intense brushstrokes, dynamic compositions, and pulsating colour create works in which painting becomes not representation, but action — a living, instinctive, and constantly evolving process. At the core of the artist’s practice lies painterliness itself: the memory of colour, the force of the brushstroke, and emotional intensity.
The artist can be described as a true jazz improviser on canvas — his work emerges from spontaneous gesture, intuition, and inner energy. Inspirations drawn from literature, mythology, and nature merge into a ritualistic act of painting, where every brushstroke becomes part of a living painterly language.
The exhibition also invites viewers to reconsider the Neo-Expressionist tradition in Lithuania and reflects on the importance of painting today as a living and continuously evolving art form.
A SHORT INTRODUCTION to the artist
Vytautas Dubauskas was born in 1958 in Šiauliai and currently lives and works in Vilnius. Until 1978, he studied at the S. Žukas Applied Arts Technical School in Kaunas. He later studied at the Vilnius State Art Institute (now the Vilnius Academy of Arts) until 1985. Since 1990, he has been a member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association as well as the artists’ group Angis.
The artist began his creative career as an abstract expressionist (Neo-Expressionist); later, elements of brutal realism and references to popular culture also appeared in his work (from Prof. R. Jurėnaitė’s article in Kultūros barai, 2020).
V. Dubauskas speaks through the essential categories of painterly expression — energetic and nervous brushstrokes, bold and dramatic bursts of colour, and sharp chromatic contrasts. The artist is known for thinking in series and working with interconnected compositions in which silhouettes emerge, drifting between abstraction and recognisable forms (art critic Dr. V. Poškus).
He has participated in exhibitions since 1986, holding 19 solo exhibitions and taking part in more than 30 group exhibitions in Lithuania, Poland, Germany, and the United Kingdom. His works are included in the collections of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art, the MO Museum, the National Art Museum of Georgia in Kutaisi, Aarhus University in Denmark, and private collections in Denmark, the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Israel, Poland, and Austria.
