Collection: Vytautas Dubauskas

Born on February 12, 1958, in Šiauliai. Lives and works in Vilnius.

1974–1978 studied at the Kaunas S. Žukas Applied Arts Technical School.
1979–1985 studied at the Vilnius State Art Institute (now the Vilnius Academy of Arts).
Since 1990 member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association.
Since 1990 member of the artists’ group “Angis”.

The artist began his creative path as an abstract expressionist (neo-expressionist), later incorporating elements of brutal realism and references to popular culture [article by Prof. R. Jurėnaitė, “Kultūros barai,” 2020]. The expressiveness of brushwork, an unrestrained explosion of color and form, helps the artist to convey various phenomena of the surrounding environment in a spontaneous, sensitive, and subjective way. According to the painter himself, it is important that the viewer feels the physical and spiritual energy emanating from the painting, and that it is expressive and impactful.

V. Dubauskas speaks through essential categories of painterly expression—energetic and nervous brushstrokes, bold and drastic bursts of color, and sharp combinations of hues. The artist is characterized by serial thinking and working with interrelated compositions, in which silhouettes taking on familiar contours wander (art historian Dr. V. Poškus).

The artist has been participating in exhibitions since 1986. He has held 19 solo exhibitions and taken part in more than 30 group exhibitions in Lithuania, Poland, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

His works are included in important institutional and private collections: the Lithuanian Art Museum, the National M. K. Čiurlionis Art Museum, the MO Museum, the National Museum of Georgia (Kutaisi), Aarhus University in Denmark, as well as private collections in Denmark, the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Israel, Poland, and Austria.
