Monique Arquizan (b. 1940) is a French painter, watercolourist, lithographer, engraver and sculptor. A teacher of visual arts with a degree in art history, she exhibited in Paris from 1970 to 1991, including a show alongside Leonor Fini at Galerie Pierre Hautot in 1980. The female figure dominates her highly personal work: pure, serene faces emerge from fabrics in warm, rich colours, creating a strongly coloured, dreamlike world. Musicians are another recurring motif, as in her lithographs “Joueur de mandoline” and “Joueur de flûte”. She received numerous awards, including the Prize of the City of Paris (1987, Musée du Luxembourg) and watercolour prizes at renowned salons. In 1983 she won the Presse d’Or prize for lithography, and her prints have been published in France, the United States and Japan. From 1992 she lived in Nancy, exhibiting at the Épinal Biennale, and since 1999 she has worked in Montpellier, where she has received painting prizes in the Hérault region.
