Collection: Martynas Gediminas
Martynas Gediminas’s painting is monumental, restrained, yet at the same time intense. His works are characterized by a confidence in the language of painting, a considered relationship with their surroundings, and an ability to create a powerful visual field using a limited range of formal means. Brushwork, texture, the rhythm of color fields, and layers of paint showing through one another become not merely techniques, but the primary language of the work.
The artist’s painting is marked by an economy of artistic expression and aesthetic precision. The conditional and abstract nature of his compositions is complemented by the shimmer of silver, gold, foil, and other metallic surfaces. Cool aluminum frames contrast with the warm, pulsating palette emanating from the paintings. Here, color is not merely a flat plane: it is layered, concealed, and revealed again, absorbing the tone of the underlying surface and changing according to the light and viewing angle. As a result, the works acquire a sense of shimmer, softness, and continual transformation.
For Martynas Gediminas, the painting process itself and improvisation are essential. He seeks a balance between opposing poles: spontaneous gesture and controlled composition, vivid color and pause, rough texture and glossy surface, materiality and optical illusion. The artist experiments with acrylics, printing inks, foil, and metals, at times deliberately erasing traces of earlier layers to create a new surface structure. The painting reveals itself gradually and depends on the viewer’s movement, the trajectory of their gaze, and the lighting.
His studies in textile art and design at the Vilnius Academy of Arts shaped the artist’s sensitivity to material, color, surface, and rhythm. These qualities have carried over into his current painting practice, which is dominated by intuitive abstraction and compositions defined by expansive gestures.
