Markus Nine (b. 1980) is a French sculptor and painter based in Saint-Martin-d’Uriage in the French Alps. He works in painting with acrylic and oil, and in sculpture with metal mesh, cement, resins, polyurethane and mixed materials, as well as bronze. His art explores the human condition and the passage of time through distorted human figures and abstracted forms. Rather than physical beauty, he seeks to express inner emotional states, giving his bodies a textured, tormented surface. He draws inspiration from Gothic gargoyles, from Expressionism and from the tradition of grotesque figuration. In 2010 he received a gold medal for sculpture at the Art2Bruxelles salon. His work has been shown by galleries in France and Berlin and at art fairs in Belgium and the Netherlands. The unique bronze and metal sculpture “Gargoyle IV”, offered by TUMO Gallery, belongs to his series inspired by the grotesque stone creatures of Gothic cathedrals.
