Jordy Kerwick (b. 1982, Melbourne, Australia) is a self-taught Australian painter who lives and works in Albi, France. He began his painting career in 2016 and quickly became known for a bold, raw approach to palette and pattern, producing vivid, expressionistic and highly stylised compositions. His paintings are populated by domestic objects, predatory animals and mythical creatures, from taxidermy rugs to double-headed cobras and feathered unicorns. Kerwick combines art-historical references and ancient iconography, such as Egyptian symbols, with the flat graphic language of contemporary comics. He cites Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism and Hard-edge painting among his influences, naming artists such as Robert Motherwell, Helen Frankenthaler and Henri Matisse. He works in oil, acrylic, spray paint, oil stick and collage on a variety of surfaces. Between 2018 and 2022 he held solo exhibitions in cities including Santa Monica, New York, Hong Kong, London, Paris, Athens, Sydney, Tokyo and Brisbane, and he is represented by Vito Schnabel Gallery. The painting “Saint Joanie the Gambler” (2019), oil, acrylic and collage on canvas, offered by TUMO Gallery, dates from the early years of his rapidly developing practice and shows his layered, collage-based approach.
