Jesus Mariano Leuus, often known simply as Jesus Leuus, is a painter associated with Mexican art and based in Mexico City since his teens. He entered the “La Esmeralda” school at fourteen, and in the 1960s his work was handled by Galería Misrachi. His minimalist, stylised painting draws on Aztec and Maya designs, its monumental, simplified figures – often families and everyday scenes – speaking of love, sorrow, life and death.
Jesus Mariano Leuus, often known simply as Jesus Leuus, is a painter associated with the Mexican art scene who has lived in Mexico City since his teenage years. At the age of fourteen he entered the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking “La Esmeralda” in Mexico City. His painting is marked by a minimalist, strongly stylised approach inspired by the ancient designs of the Aztecs and Maya, which he translates into a contemporary idiom. He typically works in acrylic or oil on masonite and linen, hand-mixing his pigments and adding marble dust to create a matte, textured surface. His monumental, simplified figures address emotional and social themes – love, sadness, wealth and poverty, life and death – with the family and everyday scenes appearing frequently. His works were handled in the 1960s by Galería Misrachi in Mexico City and appear regularly on the international secondary market. The painting “Seated Family Holding Their Child In Red” (1968), oil on cardboard, offered by TUMO Gallery, shows his characteristic treatment of the family group as a compact, monumental form.
