Jacob (Jacques) Koslowsky (1904–1993), born Jokūbas Kazlauskas, was a Lithuanian-born painter of the École de Paris. He was born on 13 March 1904 in Pakuonis, in the Prienai district of Lithuania, to a modest Jewish family, and attended the Kaunas Art School. In 1924 he left for Florence, initially to study medicine, but soon turned entirely to art and was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts there, where he trained under Felice Carena. He also spent time in Tel Aviv, then in British Mandatory Palestine, where he painted and wrote art criticism, and it was there that he adopted the name Jacques Koslowsky. Settling in Paris, he lived in the Latin Quarter and later had a studio in Montparnasse; he first exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1927 and became a member of the Salon des Indépendants in 1930. In the summer of 1940, ahead of the German advance, he left France and sailed from Lisbon to the United States, receiving American citizenship in 1946. He returned to France in 1947, and in 1964 discovered Mallorca, where he eventually settled in Bunyola. He died in Palma de Mallorca in 1993. The painting “Women with children”, oil on board, offered by TUMO Gallery, reflects the figurative, humane subjects characteristic of his work.
