Elena Balsiukaitė-Brazdžiūnienė (b. 1958, Kaunas, Lithuania) is a Lithuanian painter and art educator, regarded as a prominent representative of Lithuanian expressive painting. She studied at the Stepas Žukas School of Applied Art in Kaunas and graduated in painting from the Lithuanian State Art Institute (now the Vilnius Academy of Arts) in 1989. Since 1989 she has taught at the Antanas Martinaitis Art School in Kaunas, where she was also deputy director from 1999 to 2015. In 1990 she co-founded “Keturios” (“The Four”), a group of four young Kaunas women painters that exhibited together until 1996 and was known for its bold, non-academic, expressive brushwork. Alongside painting she draws on newspapers and old photographs and uses collage, coloured paper, sand, flower petals and found objects. Her subjects range from still lifes and urban landscapes – notably the old military buildings of the Šančiai district of Kaunas, shown in the series “Šančių grožybės” and “Šančių misterijos” – to portraits, the world of teenagers and social themes. She has held more than thirty solo exhibitions, and her works are in the collections of the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art in Kaunas and the MO Museum in Vilnius, as well as in private collections in Lithuania and abroad. The oil painting “Into the Depths” (“Gelmėn”, 2012), 30 × 40 cm, offered by TUMO Gallery, reflects the expressive colour and gesture characteristic of her work.
