Collection: CUPRUM | solo exhibition by Neringa Akcijonaitytė
On 15 October, TUMO Gallery opens “Cuprum”, a solo exhibition by Neringa Akcijonaitytė exploring the relationship between copper and ceramics, the interaction of materials, and the unpredictability of the creative process.
The exhibition brings together two seemingly opposing materials – soft, earthy clay and hard, cold metal. Their interaction becomes a starting point for reflecting on the roles of artist and researcher, the significance of experimentation, and the boundary between controlled and spontaneous creative processes.
“Cuprum” presents an ongoing investigation into the electrochemical forming of copper and its potential applications in ceramics. The exhibition features early experiments, trials in copper crystal growth, and a series of sculptural ceramic objects developed through this research. Deliberately moving away from traditional ideals of ceramic perfection, the artist allows materials to deform, crack, and transform through chemical processes. Fragile surfaces, fractures, and copper crystals emerging through the cracks become integral elements of the works rather than imperfections.
An important part of the exhibition is the live process of copper crystal growth taking place in the gallery. Beginning at the exhibition opening, the electroforming process will continue throughout the exhibition, allowing visitors to observe the gradual formation of a new sculpture. In this way, viewers are invited to experience not only the finished artwork but also the process of its creation.
“Cuprum” brings together scientific research, experimentation, and artistic practice, questioning established notions of material craftsmanship and aesthetic value.
