Location: KABLYS | SEA | CULTURE, S. Darius and S. Girėnas St. 13, Palanga
Visiting hours: June 24, 2023 - September 1, 2023 - daily 10:00 - 20:00.
At the end of the colonial era, as African nations sought their own identity, visual art became one of the catalysts for cultural transformation. The once dominant traditional art forms – often wooden sculptures and masks of ritual and sacred purpose – are now being replaced by the vibrant and talented work of contemporary artists.
In recent decades, due to intense political and social movements, artworks by African and African diaspora artists have attracted increasing interest, recognized for their invaluable influence on African art traditions and contemporary creators on the development of postmodern civilization.
The exhibited paintings and sculptures synthesize the rich cultural heritage of Africa, reflections of the continent's history, and a contemporary perspective. The artworks blend historical and mythological figures, traditional symbols and textile patterns with influences from the Western world, contemporary authorities, everyday life realities, and the fashion industry. By employing new forms of expression, artists explore themes of identity, migration, tolerance, war and peace, initiate intercultural dialogue, and encourage a reconsideration of the prevailing myth about the African continent.
