Antanas Tamošaitis (1906–2005) was a Lithuanian painter, graphic artist and textile artist, and one of the most outstanding figures of 20th-century Lithuanian culture. Born in Barzdai, he studied painting and graphic art at the Kaunas Art School (1923–1928) and in Mstislav Dobužinskis’s studio, and was one of the founders of the Society of Independent Artists (1930). From 1926 to 1939 he led expeditions collecting Lithuanian folk art and was the first to describe and classify Lithuanian national costumes by ethnographic region. Together with his wife, Anastazija Tamošaitienė, he pioneered professional textile art in inter-war Lithuania. He taught at the Kaunas Art School, the Agricultural Academy in Dotnuva and the Vilnius Academy of Arts, and headed the weaving studio of the Kaunas Institute of Applied Art. In 1944 he left Lithuania, taught in Austria and Germany, and in 1949 moved to Canada, where in 1950 the couple founded an art and weaving studio in Kingston. His paintings, watercolours and lithographs combine geometric stylisation and decorative forms with motifs from Lithuanian folk art. He returned to Lithuania in 2000 and was an honorary professor of the Vilnius Academy of Arts. His works are held by the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art, the Čiurlionis Art Gallery in Chicago and the universities of Ottawa and Toronto.
