Collection: Adelė Liepa Kaunaitė

Adelė Liepa Kaunaitė (b. 1990) is a Lithuanian painter of the younger generation who trained in fresco, mosaic and stained glass at the Vilnius Academy of Arts and has exhibited at the contemporary art quadrennial “Q19”. Her surreal paintings draw on Lithuanian mythology and nature: moon goddesses, trees and mythical creatures emerge from heavy, stone-like masses, translucent dripping paint and bold, sometimes phosphorescent colour.

Adelė Liepa Kaunaitė (b. 1990, Vilnius) is a Lithuanian painter of the younger generation whose work blends surreal imagery with a deep sense of Lithuanian folklore and nature. She grew up in the countryside near Šakiai and studied at the Šakiai art school, where her father teaches art. She graduated from the Vilnius Academy of Arts with a BA in fresco and mosaic (Monumental Art Department, 2013) and an MA in stained glass (2015). Since 2016 she has been a member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association (Vilnius painters’ section). Critics note that her training in monumental art gives her paintings heavy, stone-like masses and strong silhouettes, combined with translucent, dripping paint and bold, at times phosphorescent colour. Her imagery – moon goddesses, trees, mythical creatures – draws on Lithuanian mythology and associative thinking, questioning the borders between the real and the imagined. In the cycle “The Race of Trees” she addresses ecological loss, presenting trees as a vanishing race that once protected the planet. Alongside painting she creates sculptural works in painted wood, such as the totem-like “Hacker” (2022). Her works were shown at the contemporary art quadrennial “Q19” and in numerous solo exhibitions in Lithuania, and she has taken part in group shows in Poland, the Netherlands and Russia. In 2023 TUMO Gallery presented her work in the exhibition “TOTEMS” together with William Bakaïmo.
