Į Pietų Ameriką ieškodamas laimės J.Rimša iškeliavo 1926 m. Dirbo Brazilijos kavos plantacijose, vėliau persikėlė į Argentiną, kur 1931–1934 m. studijavo Buenos Aires meno akademijoje. 1935–1936 m. jis gyveno Bariločės mieste (Argentina), vis keliaudamas į Braziliją ir į Boliviją, semdamasis įspūdžių ir tobulindamas savo meninę kūrybą. Nuo 1943 m. J.Rimša, pakviestas Bolivijos vyriausybės, gyveno, kūrė ir dirbo pedagoginį darbą Sakrėje (Sucre), vėliau 1944 m. įkūrė privačią meno mokyklą La Pase, šiose vietose palikdamas puikius mokinius, kurie vėliau sėkmingai žengė į tarptautinę meno sritį. Klajokliškas gyvenimo būdas neleido jam įsikurti vienoje vietoje (daugiausia Bariločėje), keliaudavo ir po kitas P.Amerikos šalis (Peru, Čilė), 8 mėnesius praleido Taityje, kol, pablogėjus sveikatai, 1967 m. iki gyvenimo pabaigos įsikūrė Santa Monikoje (Kalifornijos valstija, JAV).

Dailės parodose dalyvavo nuo 1934 m. Dalis jo kūrinių dabar saugoma Nacionaliniame M. K. Čiurlionio dailės muziejuje Kaune, privačiuose Vilniaus ir Kauno kolekcininkų rinkiniuose. Dailininkas nutapė figūrinių kompozicijų, peizažų, portretų, sukūrė originalią akvarelės techniką. Kūrybai įtakos turėjo ispanų tapybos koloritas, senoji indėnų kultūra, kurioje tapytojas įžvelgė analogijų su archajišku lietuvių liaudies menu, saulės kultu, papročiais. Paveiktas Tahiti J. Rimša išgrynino koloritą, akcentavo džiunglių dvasios meninę pajautą, primityviosioms kultūroms būdingą išoriškai paslėptą vidinę įtampą.

Už nuopelnus Bolivijus kultūrai J.Rimšai suteiktas Bolivijos garbės piliečio titulas (1950), už nuopelnus Bolivijos kultūrai pelnė Andų Kondoro ordiną - garbingiausią Bolivijos civilinį apdovanojimą. The three figures gathered together represent not specific individuals, but the core of the community, the eternal circle of existence around a sacred hearth. The artist has painted not everyday life, but a metaphysical state—a deep, contemplative silence and humility before the fire of life. The vivid red accents on the canvases pulsate like an inner energy, contrasting with the massive, “stone-like” volumes of ochre and brown. This is the unseen Native American daily life, in which the individual dissolves into the collective spirit, and a simple gathering by the fire takes on the weight of a sacred ritual. Here, Rimša masterfully demonstrates that the Native American spirit arises not from external celebrations, but from this strong, unbroken connection to home and the earth.

Sign.: LL J.Rimša

Museum authorship. The religious procession depicted in a narrow colonial street becomes not so much a historical chronicle as a scene of profound emotional outpouring. Above the heads of the procession participants, the sky breaks into an expressive, magnetic vortex reminiscent of Vincent van Gogh’s style and symbolizing the spiritual power of prayer. The kneeling female figures with colorful mantillas and the solemn flag-bearers create a sacred rhythm that emphasizes humility and repentance. Here, Rimša has captured not an external ritual, but an internal, invisible tension of faith that connects earthly life with cosmic eternity. It is a vision of spiritual awakening and communal prayer, in which the individual seems to vanish into the mystery.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0292/6552/6843/files/pop_1_63be0ceb-e520-4d51-944d-319e3c75379c.jpg?v=1779643609
jonas-rimsa-flamenco-oil-on-canvas-83x92-102x110
Jonas Rimša | Flamenco | Oil on canvas, 83x92 (102x110)

Sign.: LR J.Rimša

One of the most prominent Lithuanian expatriate artists, Jonas Rimša (1903-1978), seeking happiness, embarked on a journey to South America in 1926, after which he wandered, gathering impressions and refining his artistic creativity. The artist deliberately omits any domestic details or environmental cues; thus, the figures frozen in darkness seem to hover in a metaphysical space, beyond time. A mystical light, emanating from below, highlights the ascetic facial features and the humbly folded hands, which serve as the central accent of this sacred communion. The abundance of figures and their dense, sculptural arrangement create a unified, monumental mass, symbolizing a collective spiritual experience. By eschewing the presence of a table or other worldly attributes, the artist focuses entirely on an inner vigil—a silent yet active watchfulness in the presence of truth. This is a profound example of mysticism, where the human figure becomes a universal symbol of humility and the search for spiritual light.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0292/6552/6843/files/pop_8fe0944d-0cb8-444f-b75f-f0b8b2dd8fe0.jpg?v=1775756042
jonas-rimsa-the-light-of-pachamama-oil-on-canvas-94x84-116-5x106-5
Jonas Rimša | The Light of Pachamama | Oil on canvas, 94x84 (116.5x106.5)

Signed lower right: J.
