John Carter (g. 1970) - American multidisciplinary, conceptual artist, and filmmaker, known professionally as Carter, based in New York City.

Carter was born in Norwich, Connecticut, and studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1992. In 1994, he participated in an artist residency at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Carter earned a Master's degree from the University of California in 1997.

Best known for his works spanning various media - from painting and photography to sculptural installations, films, and videos - Carter's works have been exhibited internationally, including at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate Modern in London, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, exhibitions such as "USA Today" and "Abstract America" at the Saatchi Gallery in London, England. His works have also been shown at the Royal Academy in London and at the museum in Bolzano, Italy.

In 2008, an extensive catalogue of Carter's works, edited by George Kargl, titled "An Arm with Hair," "The Vienna Catalogue 1973," was released. In 2009, Publication Studios published Carter's book "California Film: 1996."
